From NFL Strongholds to Morocco's Record-Breaking Mega-Stadium
While elite national teams battle on the pitch during the 2026 World Cup, architectural mastermind Populous is shaping the tournament's physical legacy. The Anglo-American firm has designed or renovated five of the 16 host venues across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, cementing its status as the world leader in elite sports infrastructure.
The firm's impressive 2026 portfolio includes Houston's 72,000-capacity NRG Stadium, featuring the NFL's first retractable roof, and Kansas City's famously loud 73,000-seat Arrowhead Stadium. Populous also delivered Boston's Gillette Stadium, Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, and Mexico's beautiful 53,500-seat Monterrey venue, alongside designing Argentina's tournament base camp for Lionel Messi and his squad.

Beyond tactical setups on the pitch, visibility and fan experience dictate these designs. Populous France president François Clément highlighted Boston's split-level concept, stating it 'offers spectators excellent visibility wherever they are.' Clément emphasizes that these modern multi-purpose arenas are specifically engineered to seamlessly transition between international football matches and American football.
Looking ahead to the 2030 World Cup, Populous is already constructing the game's future. In collaboration with Oualalou + Choi, the firm is building the Grand Stade Hassan II near Casablanca, Morocco. Slated for completion in 2027, this monumental 115,000-seat arena will become the largest football stadium in the world, setting a brand-new global benchmark for sports infrastructure.
