Tragic Pre-Match Clash Outside Beaujoire Leads to High Court Murder Trial
The Cour d'assises de Loire-Atlantique has scheduled the murder trial of a VTC driver from March 23 to 26, 2027. The suspect stands accused of fatally stabbing 31-year-old Nantes supporter Maxime Leroy, an influential member of the Brigade Loire fan group, prior to a Ligue 1 fixture against OGC Nice on December 2, 2023.
The driver surrendered to police on the night of the tragedy and confessed to inflicting two knife wounds. However, the defense maintains that he lacked intent to kill, claiming he was acting under duress and physical threat after his vehicle was swarmed and attacked by rival football fans outside the Stade de la Beaujoire.

A second driver involved in the convoy has already received an 18-month suspended prison sentence and a five-year weapons ban. Initially questioned as a witness, investigators upgraded his status to a suspect after discovering he destroyed crucial dashcam footage and assaulted Leroy with a telescopic baton during the chaotic altercation.
The incident occurred after a designated police escort plan failed when thirty Nice supporters arrived independently via commercial flights. Instead of gathering at the mandatory security checkpoint 40 kilometers away, they booked private hire vehicles to the stadium, routing them directly past a notorious Nantes supporter stronghold where tensions violently boiled over.
